• The open top design became popular during the California gold rush in the 1850's. Access to the gun in a quick fashion (versus having it covered up) became a priority.
• 100 years later, Hollywood and its spaghetti westerns, not to mention Clint Eastwood movies, brought the image of the gun and holster to mainstream America
